Chapman bench at its home

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Frances and I went to Chapman Elementary today to meet with the young people who painted the tiles, Huntsville Land Trust folks, teachers and others to celebrate the unveiling of the bench before it was taken to its new home on Huntsville Land Trust property. Its home will be on the way to the pavilion and near the junction of several trails. The bench with its beautiful tiles will be the start of many great adventures into the trails.

Thank you to all who made this happen, it touched a lot of lives and over the many years of use it will touch many more.

Here is a map with Chapman School, Land Trust Parking (off Bankhead Parkway) and most importantly the Chapman Bench.

Chapman Bench — arranging tiles 1/21/09

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Last night, we saw the decorated tiles for the first time when we met to arrange them on the bench.  It was great to see how creative the children are: the images of things with wings are so uplifting and such very good work.  We are thrilled to be closer to fruition of our vision for the finished object in an inspiring setting.  Jennie described her reaction to seeing tiles for several benches after firing in a kiln.  Hear her words  in this short video clip from last night:
